Not far from the shore, a wingless old bird had been watching the monkeys. His name was Sampati and he was Jatayuâs brother. Sampati had lost his wings when he was young. One day, he and Jatayu flew high into the sky, higher than they had ever flown before. Jatayu wanted to circle the sun but as he grew close to it, his wings began to burn. Sampati, the elder one, in a great burst of speed flew higher than his brother to protect him from the sunâs sharp rays. Jatayu was saved, but Sampatiâs wings were burned off. He fell to the ground, unable to fly any longer. He ate whatever was near him, but he was often hungry.
On this day, Sampati could not believe his good fortune. âSurely the gods still love me,â he thought as he saw the monkey hordes lie down on the beach. âLook how much food they have sent me!â He shuffled over to where they were lying and all the monkeys screamed and ran as far as they could, convinced that a monster had come to finish them off.
Jambavan went over and spoke to the bird. âSampati, my old friend, we have not met since we were young! What are you doing, frightening these monkeys who are on a great mission? Weâll share the food and water we have found with you. Sit and talk to me, let me tell you why we are all here,â he said.
Sampati was surprised to see his old friend and went and sat with him. Jambavan continued, âWe are trying to find Sita, the wife of Rama, prince of Ayodhya. She was carried away from the Dandaka forest by the king of the rakshasas. In fact, your brother Jatayu tried to stop him and save the princess, but Ravana killed him. Can you help us find him?â
